Motorists and pedestrians can face fines for crosswalk violations

The City of Sault Ste. Marie and Sault Ste. Marie Police are reminding everyone to obey marked crosswalks.

Motorists who fail to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk face a fine of $365 and lose four demerit points.

Pedestrians who cross streets at unmarked points can face a $50 fine.

Cyclists must dismount their bike while crossing at a marked crosswalk, and if they don’t, they face similar fines to pedestrians.

Crosswalks are marked by a white ladder pattern and often include roadside signs, flashing lights and overhead signage.

Motorists and cyclists must come to a complete stop when approaching a crosswalk with flashing lights.

When a crosswalk’s lights are not lit, motorists and cyclists can proceed through as normal.
