DAVAO Occidental, the reigning MPBL and Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup champion, has made a major upgrade for its campaign in the FilBasket League.
The already formidable Tigers roster has gone even deeper with the inclusion of former PBA players John Wilson and Paolo Hubalde.
Wilson, who played for the San Juan Knights team that won the MPBL crown in 2019, and Hubalde, a member of Barangay Ginebra’s champion team in the PBA in 2007, are set to join the star-studded Davao Occidental team which will now be handled by former PBA player Matthew Makalintal.
Wilson, who was also named Regular Season MVP of the MPBL last year, is expected to add firepower to the Tigers, while Hubalde, son of PBA great Freddie Hubalde, will provide stability in the backcourt of Davao Occidental.
They will join the core of the team anchored on Mark Yee, Billy Robles, Joseph Terso, Jerwin Gaco, Bonbon Custodio, Marco Balagtas and Emman Calo. Just recently, the Tigers also acquired Keith Agovida, Rob Celiz, Chris Lalata, Alwyn Alday, Irven Palencia and Allan Santos.
The Tigers are one of the favored squads to win the inaugural tournament of the FilBasket League, which is still waiting for the go-signal to hold a bubble tournament at the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.
Originally, FilBasket league was set to play in Splendido in Laurel, Batangas, but couldn’t get an approval from the local government unit.
Aside from Davao Occidental, the other teams competing in the fledgling league are the San Juan Knights, Pasig-Sta. Lucia Realtors, EOG Burlington, AICC Manila, 7A Primus, FSD Makati Army, Medical Depot-Puma, MTrans Buracai de Laiya, Muntinlupa Defenders and Nueva Ecija Bespren.
