Mr Brunner said that as well as Germany, he would like to see the Netherlands, EU member states in Scandinavia, as well as the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Baltic countries involved.

He added: “Anyone in this circle who is committed to a sustainable financial policy is welcome.”

Last year, Sebastian Kurz, the then-Chancellor of Austria, had opposed EU loan plans with the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden, referring to the group as the “frugal four”.

His intervention follows another split in the EU, concerning whether nuclear power should be considered environmentally sustainable as member states chase net zero carbon emission goals.
